İpek/Yeğinsü

İpek Yeğinsü was born in Istanbul in 1981. She graduated from the department of International Relations at Koç University and completed her master’s degree at the same university in Anatolian Civilizations and Cultural Heritage Management. In addition to working in several art institutions, the artist has participated in various group shows.

Color, abstraction and composition lie at the center of Yeğinsü’s art. These are the building stones of a path leading into the subconscious. The artist’s figures combine her inner affects with her deep interest in philosophy, carrying traces of autobiographic narratives and social critique.

Yeğinsü’s City Lights series began in Istanbul in 2008 and continues with Halikarnassus and The Tower series. The project arises from the artist’s intention of painting with the camera.

In such paintings created with an abstract expressionist gesture, the camera replaces the brush and the light replaces the paint. By documenting the artificial lights that give the city its identity at night, the artist aims at capturing the city’s soul, claiming that our impressions of the city in the hurry of every day life are more reminiscent of dynamic and blurry impressions rather than static images.

Her series titled On the Road rely on the same principle. Views taken from vehicles in movement underline both the journey itself, and the fluidity of memories acquired during the journey.
